The Korina Collection series was launched in 2012, with four styles of guitar and one bass. Only 100 of each type were made. For the record Korina is a form of African Mahogany, and as such produces punchy mid-focused tones that gives guitars a big, fat sound. The Pao Ferro fretboard is a Brazilian hardwood similar to Rosewood, but is a harder which provides a bit more snap and attack.

The Duncan Seth Lover pickup is an "unpotted" humbucker that is very faithful to the construction and materials used in the original PAF pickups. Using Alnico 2 magnets, the SH-55 Seth Lover has a fairly low output which makes for a very natural sound with flavorful dynamics. While trending towards the warmer end of the spectrum, there is good note definition, and a clean top end that is round but not muffled. Single note lines have a good degree of substance, but not thin or measly. Low end response is a lot like a traditional vintage Telecaster® pickup: The attack is slightly soft, with a warm woody character that fills out the lower range with a nice bouncy feel. But don’t think you can’t rock with it. Using the amp to drive the pickup creates a really nice lead voice that brings out the creamy mids and sparkling highs.

The ASAT Classic bridge pickup is well known for it’s strong output, excellent clarity, and ability to both twang and rock. Where the Seth Lover is warm and somewhat reserved in nature, the ASAT bridge pickup responds with a piano-like low end attack complemented with shimmering highs. The ASAT’s solid output also makes it a great lead pickup, and it absolutely loves overdrive pedals, creating harmonically complex rock crunch that is bristling with overtones.

Both pickups together produce a full, sweet chime that is spot-on for rhythm, picking, or faux-Rickenbacker tones that are more dimensional and less anemic. Compared to a standard Tele® the humbucker adds more power and heft, but the notes are still clean and marvelously bell-like, with a nice poppy twang. Add a touch of gain and you’re rewarded with some great lead tones that have plenty of top end edge, but are fuller and less brittle than just the bridge pickup.

Unique and rare, the G&L Bluesboy Korina Collection is a picture of versatility. Easily jump from jazz standards to country chicken pickin’ to smoky blues, all with the flick of a switch. Kicking in some pedal gain will also get you get a nice rock crunch that can handle the classics and more. The perfect guitar for players that need to cover a lot of ground.
